Block Paving Driveway Installation
We know that getting a new driveway can be disruptive, so we’ve fine-tuned our installation process to be quick, efficient, and hassle-free.
Step 1. Driveway Site Preparation
We’ll start by thoroughly checking your driveway area, taking precise measurements, and monitoring how water drains. This helps us plan the best layout for your new driveway. We’ll also check the soil to make sure it’s stable enough for block paving.
Next, we’ll dig out the old surface 200 to 300mm depending on the ground conditions. Then we’ll put down a layer of MOT Type 1 aggregate before using a plate compactor to solidify it. We may also use a special fabric called a geotextile membrane to stop the soil and sub-base from mixing.
Step 2. Laying the Block Paving
Now for laying the blocks. First, we spread a layer of sharp sand about 30 to 50mm deep and level it carefully. Then we’ll start laying the blocks in the pattern you’ve chosen. Herringbone is popular because it’s strong, but we can do others too.
Sometimes blocks will be cut to fit around edges and obstacles, and for this we use a block splitter or angle grinder with a diamond blade. We’ll work our way across the driveway, making sure the block pavers are perfectly straight before tapping gently into place with a rubber mallet.
Step 3. Final Touches & Walkthrough
Once all the blocks are down, we’ll spread kiln-dried sand over the whole surface, brushing it into the gaps between the blocks. This is really important because it locks the blocks together and stops them moving about. Then we’ll use the plate compactor again to vibrate the blocks, settling them into their final position.
Finally, we’ll give everything a good clean and show you the finished driveway. If you’ve chosen to have a sealant applied, we’ll do that now (it’s not always needed, but it can help protect the blocks and keep them looking good for longer). We’ll also explain how to look after your new driveway so it stays in great shape.
